DAY 2: "LAS TINTORERAS" TOUR (2-3 HOURS) AND "MURO DE LAS LÁGRIMAS" TOUR (2-3 HOURS)
We explore Tintoreras, a set of small islets filled with hidden coves and beaches. Here, we will find the endemic Galapagos penguin as well as white tip sharks, sea turtles, and sea lions.
This is the largest island in the Galapagos and is still being formed by 6 shield volcanoes. Hence, Isabela is one of the most volcanically active spots on the planet
This afternoon, we embark on perhaps the most scenically-varied hike in the Galapagos. Along the trail, we will visit El Muro de las Lagrimas(Wall of Tears). When Isabela was used as a penal colony, prisoners constructed a towering wall of lava rocks for no other purpose than to keep them distracted from the madness of isolation. We continue along white sand beaches, mangroves, brackish lagoons, and a lava tube. The area is filled with giant tortoises and birdlife. Afterwards we will visit the breeding center and the flamingo lagoon.
Breakfast and overnight at the hotel.
DAY 3: "SIERRA NEGRA" VOLCANO TOUR (5-6 HOURS)
This morning, we drive up to the highlands until the road ends. Here, we do our daypacks and hike into a world of recent geological history. On the hike up, admire the incredible views of the surrounding volcanoes and sea. This is the second largest active caldera on the planet. You will walk along the rim of this enormous 30 square mile crater.
Breakfast and overnight at the hotel. Box lunch during the excursion.
DAY 4: BACK TO MAINLAND
A 45 minute navigation to a place where lava flow impacted with the ocean waves to form the stunning tubes and bridges of Los Tuneles. Los Tuneles is a marine paradise with the possibility to see white tipped shark, manta rays, parrot fish, yellowtail surgeon fish, and green sea turtles.
This site is one of the most spectacular places for snorkelling in Isabela as the water is shallow, clear and calm. This marine sanctuary is characterized by its unique geologic formations.
A series of lava flows have produced a number of arches and tunnels both under and above water, where you find a number of animal species that have taken up residence in these magnificent formations. The entry into this site is shallow and the waves can be quite rough, for this reason it is not always feasible to enter this site.
Breakfast and overnight at the hotel. Box lunch during the excursion.
DAY 5: BACK TO MAINLAND
